For Parents

Information for Parents

  • The Peyton Anderson Scholarships are a wonderful resource for your student.  Scholarships can provide between $2500-$7500 annually to students who demonstrate academic promise, good character, community involvement, and financial need.
  • Scholarships can be used for general expenses as well as college tuition, and can be combined with the HOPE Scholarship and other types of Federal and college-based Financial Aid
  • Encourage your student to complete the college application process early, by:
  • Scheduling the SAT or ACT test in the Fall semester of senior year
  • Applying to college/s of his/her choice in the Fall
  • Filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as early in 2010 as possible. Students must have a completed FAFSA on file for colleges to make a Financial Aid award.  The FAFSA requires a statement of the parents’ gross income, so filing your Income Tax as early as possible will help your student apply for college Financial Aid as well as for scholarships.
  • Turning in the complete Peyton Anderson Scholarship application by April 1

There are a number of resources to help parents and students applying to college. First of all, students should talk with their high school counselor or graduation coach.  On the web, visit sites like

www.collegeboard.com for SAT information and test dates
www.act.org for ACT information and test dates
www.gacollege411.org for information about Georgia colleges
www.fafsa.ed.gov for information about Financial Aid and on-line application

If your student needs help in paying for tests and applications, consult the high school guidance counselor.  If your student qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch, it is possible for fees to be waived for college applications and the SAT or ACT tests.  Alpha Phi Alpha’s Education Talent Search in Macon also offers assistance in paying for SAT and ACT tests; students are required to complete a series of workshops to qualify for aid.  You can reach them at www.apaets.org or 478-746-4518.
